I attended a baby shower this past weekend and a friend that I haven’t seen in many years asked me if I had dozens of photo albums of my daughter, Brooklyn. I had to laugh and then replied that I may (like MAYBE) have two printed albums. Seriously, that is all I have in her 6+ years of existence. This friend genuinely looked surprised, high five’d me, and then said…”good, I’m not alone.” I’m sure that is the assumption many make since I am a professional photographer. But here’s the deal…I’m a working mom with two jobs. And one of those jobs is to deliver your family images first. Which often means that my images come last. I have thousand of images sitting untouched in my external hard drives and on my phone. I was way better at this when Brooklyn was younger and it has only become increasingly more difficult as she has gotten older and we have both gotten busier. And I know you and my clients are busy too…which means those awesome photos I shot for you and your family may be sitting on a computer somewhere too.
But as I like to say, “time flies and memories fade.” Our captured memories are precious…they are our greatest legacy…and deserve to live in print and passed on to generations to come. Technology grows and changes so fast…the only constant is PRINT. So I am making this my mission in 2015! I want to bring our family moments to print…to adorn our walls…brighten our living spaces…and entertain our coffee tables. Is there anything better than thumbing through a photo album and remembering that little babe that is so not little anymore? I’m doing this for our family but I want to invite you to do the same. I’ll share the vendors I’m using, the walls I’m decorating, and the ideas I’m brewing to bring our digital images to print. And by the way, if you like what you see…I’ll come do it for you too! Just shoot me an email and we can chat about what you’re looking for.
Having said all that, I am grateful for my iPhone and Instagram…and the fact I’ve continued to capture our family memories at least digitally. It’s not too late to do something with these moments and memories after all. Most recently, I stumbled upon the photo app called chatbooks. They will print your Instagram photos for $6 for 60 pages of a 6×6″ book plus free shipping (and will even do custom books or series based on hashtags). They will organize them into volumes with chronological dates. I imported 1700 Instagram photos that would print in 28 volumes costing me $168. Considering that is several years worth of memories all at once, not bad! I opted to have them send me 10 at a time to alleviate the cost a bit. But they’ll send the next 10 volumes next month and continue to do so every time I have 60 more photos to print.
And as annoyed as my child gets with a camera constantly in her face, she actually LOVES to look through the chatbooks. Especially considering that the majority of the photos are of herself dating back to when she was at least two or three years old. I may have gotten a little snap happy capturing images for this post. I have a brand new camera and I’ve hardly had an opportunity to use it yet. Stay tuned for more posts in this series…Bringing Digital Images to Life & Print. Hope you’ll join in and make this mission for your family too! If you do, be sure to tag any of your photo projects with #cbmissiontoprint to share with me. Now get to printing!
