Brooklyn often has nightmares and we’ve talked about getting a dreamcatcher for her room for a while now to help prevent them (especially since a nightmare means crawling into bed with me…a habit I’ve been trying to break this past year). According to Wikipedia it’s been said “that a dreamcatcher changes a person’s dreams. …only good dreams would be allowed to filter through…bad dreams would stay in the net, disappearing with the light of day. Good dreams would pass through and slide down the feathers to the sleeper.” Sometimes a subtle change like a dreamcatcher can make all the difference in the life of a 6-year old.
I was so excited to find some in Costa Rica while we were there in April for less than $10 because I had searched extensively online and they go for $50 or more. Apparently they are a hot ticket item! Of course Brooklyn was excited when I returned home with one for her and another for Juliana. (I so wish I would have bought more now)
I’ve learned over the years the best way to capture my child is at play. She does not like staged photo shoots or sessions and I have plenty of funny stories to prove that. She is however a very imaginative child and when she is at play, it truly is a wonder to watch her creativity. So this was just an average night of her playing in our backyard with her new dreamcatcher and I saw the beauty of the moment and grabbed my camera. I’m so glad I did!
If you really want to catch your dream, you have to chase it.
For me, I’ve always thought of dreamcatchers as a symbol of ‘following your dreams’. I don’t know about you but I did not grow up with that message. Did you? Not one person ever said to me…”what is your dream?” I want my little girl to know that she can dream, achieve, and do what ever she imagines. It’s not a fairy tale…she will have to work hard. But if it’s something she truly wants to do, then hard work will yeild results. I believe that wholeheartedly.
The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.
These images really inspired me to want to capture this for my clients and their children too. Shoot me an email (firstname.lastname@example.org) if you are interested in shooting a styled Dreamcatcher mini-session with me. It will be magical!
As soon as you start to pursue a dream,
your life wakes up and everything has meaning.
